Chapter Seven

He closed his mouth over hers, and Olivia felt a hundred sensations at once. The smooth silk of his lips. The hardness of his body. The tingle of the scent of his aftershave. But beyond the physical things, she felt the rightness of what they were doing and finally comprehended what her intuition had been leading her to that morning. A real relationship with Josh Anderson was a hundred times better than the fantasy. And that was a damned good reason to stay.

The kiss seemed to go on and on as if he were memorizing all the feelings they had both been missing for four long years. When he nudged her lips open with his tongue, she gingerly accommodated him. With the simplest act, shivery responses ricocheted through her and her arms slid around his neck, her body edged closer of its own volition, and a soft sound issued from her throat.

The little moan seemed to release something in him and he not only deepened the kiss, he also began to slide them both down on the sofa. Warm delight sprinted through Olivia at the feeling of his entire body pressed along the length of hers. She didn’t mind when his hands began to roam, seeking exposed skin. First, because the skin he found was on her arms. Safe territory. But also because she was eager for his touch. Eager to take them to the next level.

He did. Slowly, as if needing to be very careful, and all the while still kissing her, Josh allowed his hand to meander to the underside of her breast. His fingers crept beneath her lacy bra, creating an opening for his hand.

Heat and need thundered through Olivia. Her breath lodged in her throat and she couldn’t move. She wasn’t even sure she was kissing Josh back anymore until she heard the soft noise of their mouths coming together and parting, more desperately now, hungrier.

But suddenly, he stopped kissing her and his eyes sprang open. He gazed at her for several seconds before he said, “What are we doing?”

She peeked at him. Desire resonated through her. She wasn’t really certain she had a voice. But having already misinterpreted their first kiss, she wasn’t taking any chances with this one. “You tell me.”

He sighed, lifted himself off the sofa and offered his hand to her, then pulled her up. “I don’t know. And that’s the point. I don’t know. So it isn’t right to go any further or do anything else until we know.”

“Okay,” she said, fighting disappointment but keenly aware that he was right. Their feelings for each other had changed. She wasn’t willing to risk their delicate start by showing her distress or forcing him into something for which he wasn’t ready.

“I don’t want to hurt you, Liv,” he said, backing away from her as if not knowing what to do. “And if we jump into something, we both know one of us could get hurt. So, I just don’t think this is right.
